If you’ve been to a craft store lately, you know how quickly those supplies add up in cost. Looking to flex your creative muscles without spending a fortune? You’re in luck. Many dollar-store finds lend themselves well to crafting. Here are two easy projects you can take on for less than $10.
These dainty dishes are perfect for displaying jewelry, holding keys or for presenting wrapped candies. You will need:
- Cloth doilies in the size and color of your choosing
- Mod Podge Stiffy
- Aluminum foil
- Plastic or ceramic bowls slightly larger than the bowls you want to make
- Small plastic container
Wrap your plastic or ceramic bowls in aluminum foil and set aside on a flat surface. Pour Mod Podge into the plastic container and dip in doilies, scrunching them to ensure they are entirely saturated. Spread doily over the bottom of the bowl and allow to sit for 24 hours or until dry. Gently pry from bowls to reveal new dishes.
Lavender Exfoliating Soaps
You can have spa day every day with these sweetly scented soaps. Display in a pretty glass jar or wrap in tissue paper and give as gifts. You will need:
- A new plastic shower loofah
- Lavender-scented soap
- Embroidery thread
- Muffin tin
- Vegetable oil spray
- Plain soap
- Olive oil
- Lavender essential oil
Take apart the loofah and cut into six pieces, then use the embroidery thread to tie the pieces into smaller loofahs. Place them in the muffin tin and spray generously with the vegetable oil. Next, grate the soaps into a saucepan and add ½ cup water, 2 Tbsp olive oil and a few drops of of essential oil. Stirring constantly, bring to boil over medium heat and then reduce heat and cook until the soap melts. If it starts to stick to pan, add more water 3 Tbsp at a time. Spoon the soap mixture on top of the loofahs in the muffin tins, then pick up the tin and drop it on the counter a few times to force out any air bubbles. Let the soap sit until it hardens, about 24 hours. Then, turn the tin over and drop onto the counter until soaps slip out of the tin. Allow to harden another 24 to 38 hours before using.
