There’s something special about being part of a community. Sure, there’s that feeling of bonhomie, but there are even greater benefits to getting involved. Strong communities with activity engaged members tend to have a less crime and a greater sense of cohesion.
There are a number of ways to contribute. It starts as simply as waving at passersby and getting to know your neighbors. The less isolated we are, the more we’re able to help one another.
Stepping out for a bit of shopping? Check out what some of the smaller, locally owned businesses have to offer. Not only will you be contributing to the diversity that gives Southlake its unique character, but you’ll be helping grow the local economy as well. Check out the Southlake Town Square to find new favorites.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people while supporting causes you feel strongly about. What’s more, it’s good for your health. Studies have indicated that people who volunteer live longer because volunteering helps alleviate stress and fills the brain with feel-good chemicals, which in turn contributes to overall health. The City of Southlake has resources for people looking to get started.
Attending community meetings gives you first-hand knowledge of the issues your community faces and allows you the opportunity to be a voice in getting them resolved. You’ll find a schedule of meetings here.
Finally, taking full advantage of the attractions and events in your community help develop an appreciation for where you are. At Carillon, you can take a dip in the swim pavilion, take a jog on one of the trails, plan a family picnic at the park or enjoy the serenity of the lake. And there are a number of events to enjoy in Southlake this month, such as the Spring Family Campout at Bob Jones Day Camp Area, Youth Fishing Day at Bob Jones Park, Southlake Community Band Concert in the Park at Rustin/Family Park and the Southlake Summer Kickoff at Rustin/Family Park. Check out the City of Southlake’s community calendar for more information on these and other events.
